Approx. 372,000 people drown every year, including 37,000 victims in the EU alone. And it’s not always catastrophes that are to blame: these tragic accidents often happen during people’s leisure time, while they’re swimming in a lake, the sea or a pool. Children are particularly vulnerable: between the ages of 5 and 14, drowning is the second most common cause of death. Among adults, men are five times more likely to drown than women. Ploota is an innovative new safety tool that activates itself in an emergency and ensures both children and adults keep their heads above water. With Ploota, swimmers can explore and enjoy the water safely – and thanks to its integrated battery and gas cartridge, the wearable is ready for use at any time.
Optimised functionality, smart good looks
Ploota is lightweight and extremely compact. The tool is worn like a necklace – and designed in such a way that users are neither stigmatised nor restricted in their movements. In addition, the product design features soft, flowing lines that inspire confidence and look extremely modern. What’s more, the product is designed for easy handling – users can reactivate Ploota themselves after deployment by simply replacing the cartridge and rolling the airbags up again. Ploota is a highly functional wearable – a kind of safety helmet for the water.
Simple protection from drowning
If the user is under water for more than 30 seconds, Ploota raises the alarm. Sensors automatically activate a gas cartridge that immediately inflates two airbags. They keep the wearer’s head safely above the surface of the water, ensuring that even unconscious swimmers are stabilised. As a result, the eponymous startup from Bensheim is presenting the first solution of its kind for an underestimated problem.
